Bobby Gillespie Gives His Verdict on the Election

As the UK heads to the polls, the frontman of Primal Scream shares a playlist of songs to help you through the day – plus, he reveals how he is voting

It’s the day of the UK general election and, up and down the country, people are heading to the polls, deciding whether they’d prefer five more years of the Tories or, well, an alternative. Here, the frontman of Primal Scream and Another Man hero Bobby Gillespie makes a case for the latter. He shares how he is voting and why – plus, he shares a playlist to help you through the day, featuring songs by Peter Tosh, Marvin Gaye and his own band.

“It’s crucial that you use your vote in this election. I’m voting for Jeremy Corbyn and the Labour Party because I believe their manifesto contains a vision for radical progressive change that could transform our country into a fairer, more inclusive, egalitarian and tolerant place to live, love and work in. We’re the fifth largest economy in the world yet many of our citizens are living precarious lives, having to rely on food banks to feed themselves and their children due to low wages and Tory ‘austerity’ cuts to universal credits and the continued ‘Neo-Liberal’ or ‘Financial Capitalist’ ideologically-driven ‘creative destruction’ of the welfare system. That’s fucked. That’s wrong. Do you really want to live in a country where Theresa May and her Tory government’s adoption of Nigel Farage’s UKIP openly racist, anti-EU, anti-immigrant rhetoric of ‘everyday fascism’ is the new norm? Where zero-hour contracts, no workers’ rights, a run-down public school system, university tuition fees and a lifetime of debt is all you have to look forward to in your future? Do you want a US-style private healthcare system that only the very wealthiest can access instead of a free at the point of asking NHS? You can choose to be part of the problem or part of the solution. Use your vote!”

Peter Tosh – Equal Rights

Marvin Gaye – You’re The Man

Jerry Lee Lewis – Revolutionary Man
