Inside Gary Card’s Colourful New Exhibition, Hysterical

The set designer and artist takes a tour of his new show Hysterical, which combines his own work with that of Cindy Sherman, Yayoi Kusama, Kaws and more

Gary Card has created extravagant and vivacious installations for brands including Comme des Garçons and Hermès, and his work with the likes of Tim Walker has appeared in the pages of Another Man, Dazed and AnOther. Card’s latest project, Hysterical, takes over the gallery space at Phillips London this summer: an immersive exhibition, featuring work by artists like Cindy Sherman, Yayoi Kusama, Kaws, Ugo Rondinone and Takashi Murakami, boasts an installation designed by Card which visitors can wind their way through to discover the artworks on display (and for sale). The work on show all relate to ideas of the “farcical and neurotic” in art, and the show’s set design is fittingly colourful, riotous, weird and wonderful in conjunction with these themes. Hysterical also features some of Card’s own paintings, and the artist has worked on collaborations with Kim Jones and Tim Walker to create new pieces for the show. In the gallery below, Card talks us through the exhibition.

Hysterical: Presented by Gary Card is at Phillips Gallery, London, until August 21, 2019.
