Documentary photographer Jane Stockdale presents a photo essay capturing the England vs Croatia game and its emotional aftermath

The dream is over. Football isn’t coming home – not this year, anyway. Last night, Croatia beat England 2-1 in a nail-biting game which dashed our hopes of a World Cup win. “A kick in the Balkans,” as the Metro eloquently put it. “They’re coming home... but everyone’s an hero,” said the Sun. Documentary photographer Jane Stockdale, who hails from a small town in Scotland, but is currently based in London, was there in Russia to capture the action – both on pitch, and off. Here, she presents a photo essay which capturing the England vs Croatia game and its emotional aftermath, from the England fans’ crushing disappointment in the result, to their visible, heartfelt pride in Gareth Southgate and his team.
