American photographer Cindy Sherman – famed for her groundbreaking series Untitled Film Stills, created between 1977 and 1980 – is to be celebrated with a major retrospective, opening at the National Portrait Gallery next summer. Curated by Paul Moorhouse, the show will feature a total of 180 photographs, including Untitled Film Stills and other images spanning her 40-year career. The National Portrait Gallery’s director, Dr Nicholas Cullinan, promises the show will, “place her art within the context of portraiture, exploring the often complex and ambiguous relationship between appearance and reality.”
