The Another Man Editors’ Saint Laurent Show Highlights

The Another Man team select their favourite looks from Anthony Vaccarello’s decadent Saint Laurent men’s debut

Last night, Saint Laurent kicked off the S/S19 men’s season with an all-out show staged at Liberty State Park, New Jersey. Backed by New York’s iconic skyline, it was here that Anthony Vaccarello delivered his first men’s collection for the house, which took inspiration from the hedonism of the 1970s – specifically the launch party of YSL’s first fragrance, Opium, in 1978, which also took place in the Big Apple, on a ship docked at South Street Seaport. Drawing on decadent spirit of 1970s style, Vaccarrello proposed a dark and glamourous wardrobe of mostly black, razor sharp tailoring. There was a hint of the rodeo and a heavy dose of Studio 54 – especially in the final eight looks, which featured black sequinned trousers and lots of silver bodypaint. Here, the Another Man editors reveal their highlights from the show.

Ben Cobb, Editor-in-Chief

“This look is everything I love about 1970s New York. It conjures up a decadent, strutting Deuce hustler on 42nd Street, fully charged with after-dark allure. It feels glamorous, seductive and slightly dangerous, the ultimate combination. A Homme Fatale for all times.”

Tim Blanks, Senior Contributing Editor

“Looking online, missing the obvious sensory and auditory overload – the chilly evening air, the volume of the soundtrack, the monumental skyline as backdrop etc etc – but I loved Paul Hameline in sparkly pants and a dozen necklaces, naked torso silvered like Bowie as Screaming Lord Byron, or a Durannie Wild Boy. For some intangible reason, this struck me as all the decadences of Saint Laurent – from the opiated glitter of Yves himself, to Tom’s disco languor, to Hedi’s rockist razor edge – distilled and reborn for a post-it-all generation. A new Satyricon!”

Ellie Grace Cumming, Fashion Director

“My favourite look was this glam rock The Idiot-era Iggy Pop moment with the silver body makeup and PVC.”

Peghah Maleknejad, Fashion Editor

“I like this look, it feels like the ultimate chic cowboy moment. It reminds me of Jon Voight in Midnight Cowboy.”
