NME to Close Print Edition After 66 Years

NME is closing its print edition after 66 years. The weekly magazine will publish its last issue on Friday and, after that, exist only online, replacing the print edition’s cover story with a new digital format called ‘the Big Read’. While NME’s circulation was as high as 307,000 in 1964, it dropped to 15,000 by 2015 when, in a last ditch attempt to keep it running, it became free. The magazine was at the forefront of rock in the 70s, punk, new wave and indie in the 80s, and Britpop in the 90s – the closure of its print edition marks the end of an era.
